GENERAL INFO

This is one of the most popular synths of the late 70s and early 80s.  Most pro synth players back then had at least one of these, and for good reason.  It was one of the first programmable polysynths and it sounded great.  2 oscillators, resonant lowpass filter, LFO, oscillator sync, white noise, 2 envelopes and an interesting polymod section so you could modulate osc 1, filter or pulse width with the filter envelope or oscillator 2 - essential for FM sounds and that Cars "sync lead" patch.  And then there's the fat unison mode, portamento and a classy wooden enclosure...   It would probably be easier to list which famous old synth musicians DIDN'T use one of these than to list which ones did!  But a few of the ones who did are: Vince Clarke, Level 42, Soft Cell, Tony Banks, Devo, Boddicker, Kate Bush, Journey, Phil Collins, Abba, Hall and Oates, Larry Fast, Tangerine Dream, Jerry Harrison / Talking Heads, Bernie Worrell, New Order (Blue Monday!), Alan Parsons Project, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Steve Winwood and I'm getting tired of typing so I'll leave it at that. :)  Let's not forget Naked Eyes.

REV 2?  Huh?  Wha's that?
The Prophet-5 came in 3 revision types - Revs 1, 2, and....you guess it, 3.  The rev 1 and 2 machines used SSM chips, while the later rev 3's used CEMs.  Some people feel the older SSM chips sound warmer and that the rev 2's are the best Prophet-5's because they've got that SSM sound and are a lot more reliable than the rev 1's.  WE love ALL Prophet 5's, but we've never compared the revisions back to back.  If we did, we may not be selling this one! ;)  (And as I type this I think to myself "there's no excuse for us not comparing this to a rev 3 since we've got one here as well", so if you see this listing disappear, we may have noticed the difference too!  :)

DETAILS:

Our items are as described, which means no typical surprise post-sale repair bills or serious flaws typical of most vintage gear deals!

This Prophet 5 rev 2 is in great shape for a used item of its type and age.
It's been recently serviced and is working fine and sounding great too.  This one's serial number is in the early 900s.  We replaced the battery in this unit so you shouldn't have to worry about having to pay someone to do this for you anytime soon.  We replaced the power cord with a nice, new one.

Cosmetically this synth looks really nice, better than most other rev 2s we've seen here and on the market.  Check the photos before reading this so you see how picky we're being:  There was a chipped area in the paint on the bottom right of the bender wheel panel that was neatly touched up with black marker and looks fine.  There's a small ding in the wood above the 2nd D# that can be seen in the photos - not major, but it's there.  We believe this can be fixed pretty easily by someone who understands wood repair.  We're expert synth people, not wood-workers, so we will leave that to the more confident!  The lettering on the metal Prophet-5 plaque on the front panel is somewhat worn - we actually like it the way it is as it adds character, but if you want replacements for this and the other plaques elsewhere on this unit, we can steer you in the right direction.  There's a short name neatly engraved, in small letters under the serial number sticker on the back of this unit - it looks fine and is nothing to worry about.  There's a very narrow crack in the top of the wood on the left side panel and a chip out of the right side's top right corner.  Remember to check out the pics, this stuff all sounds worse than it is.  The EPROMS in this unit are labeled  rev 2, 7.0 c. The labeling is worn in a couple spots, and there's MINOR evidence of use elsewhere, but overall this synth is definitely in really nice shape and working great!

Don’t let our overly critical descriptions discourage you, check out the photos above!
