EMS SYNTHI 'A' FOR SALE
Rare Vintage Analog
Synthesizer
GENERAL INFO:
The EMS Synthi A (Putney Synthesiser) is a modular synthesizer made by
Electronic Music Studios (London) Ltd. It uses pins rather than patchcords
to route signals and voltages. This is the same synthesizer engine as the EMS
VCS3 and Synthi AKS. It sounds like nothing else and is THE sound effects
machine of choice by nearly everyone who owns one. This synth has serious
character and is perfect for creating deep organic sounds. If I didnt know
better Id swear it was ALIVE! :) Great for serious sound design, laser zaps,
sweeps, growls, birds, blips, etc. You can hear it all over recordings by groups
like Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Brian Eno, Vince Clarke, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel
Jarre, Klaus Schulze, Sonic Boom, Yes, Alan Wilder, Sonic Boom and many other
very influential musicians from the 70s to today. Also used by the BBC
Radiophonic Worshop on the Dr.Who soundtrack! Features 3 oscillators, a resonant
lowpass filter, ring modulator, 2 inputs for external signal processing (some
people used the Synthi A only for this - it sounds great), noise source, output
filters, envelope / trapezoid generator, beautiful spring reverb, volt meter,
joystick (a brilliant feature!) and I think thats about it. Lets not forget the
built in speakers! This synth can be set to drone or you can use the automatic
envelope feature so it triggers itself. You can also use the built in manual
trigger button. It can also be triggered from a MIDI to CV converter with some
effort though most people use it for sound effects and processing.
CONDITION:
Our items are as described, which means no typical
surprise post-sale repair bills or serious flaws typical of most vintage gear
deals!
This actually appears to be a Synthi AKS that's lost its keyboard section along the way, so we're selling it as a Synthi A, which is exactly what a keyboardless Synthi AKS is. :) If anyone's got a spare keyboard section they don't need, let us know.
This unit is in nice shape for a used item of its type and age. There is some rust on the metal hardware outside the case
as is sometimes seen, and the case has a fair number of scratches, scuffs and imperfections but the synth section itself is lookin' good and has been thoroughly tested over a long period of time and is working great.
We've seen these come with and without metal covers for the back of the synth
unit - this one didn't have a plate when we got it but this shouldn't matter as
it screws right in to the plastic suitcase without any trouble. Someone added a simple modification that included a switch but we cut out
this mod out when we serviced this unit, so the extra switch does nothing. In fact, the switch itself is also broken. We just left it there cause we felt it would look better than a hole. :) Both case latches work but one of them sometimes needs to be pushed in to
close. This sale includes the pins shown in the photos as well as a power
cord. As stated, this Synthi works well and sounds great and should make most people looking for a used Synthi A very happy.
Don’t let our overly critical
descriptions discourage you, check out the detailed photos above!
